The term anti-microbial activity covers all modes of actions, which inhibited the growth of germs, to counteract a microbial colonization or to kill microorganisms.

Anti-microbial materials are used in many hygiene-relevant areas of life. Also in the food industry and in the pharmaceutical sector, the usage is very meaningful.

Therefore active antimicrobial materials are used to attack their biocide ingredients, the microorganisms on the cell wall, in metabolism or in the genetic material (genome). If an active principle adversely affected microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) in their vitality, this is generally referred as anti-microbial activity.
