When a person breathes, speaks, coughs, sneezes, etc., he rejects, in greater or lesser quantity, droplets secreted by the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose. These droplets evaporate quickly and leave particles suspended in the air. The majority of these particles have a diameter of between 0.5 μm and 12 μm; larger droplets, in particular, may contain microorganisms originating from the source site. The particles they contain can then spread through the air to a sensitive site, such as an open wound from an operation or sterile equipment.
Surgical masks intended for use in operating rooms and healthcare facilities with similar requirements are designed to protect the working environment, not the mask wearer. • Note that this product obtained a bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) 98%.
